Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Since her father had left, the Ford family was looked after by her grandmother, mom as well as godparents. As a young girl, she was diagnosed with an obsessive compulsive disorder. She also experienced anxiety due to the word association. Ford was fascinated by acting during her teenage years and joined the National Youth Theatre. She had been accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of weeks, she realized the school was not for her. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama, finally winning an acceptance on her fourth application. Her classmate was Shaun Dingwall, who would play a part in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford's first appearance on television was an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the moment she was done with school, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". During the Nineties, Tate could be seen on television in programmes such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. The regular theatre work she performed has led to her joining The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate gained recognition for her comedy stand-up, which was added to her resume in 1996.
